a SITE-SPECIFIC SOLO
When the ego-mechanism fails,
Eros and Thanatos wake up.
Please, ego me.
For this solo Pieter investigated how the conscious ego-mechanism fights the unconscious sexual and aggressive urges of the id. Based on Freud's research of the identity the performance became a competition between the Ego and the Id. The elevator where the solo was performed became the arena.
As a site specific work the place where Ego Me was performed, an elevator in deSingel (Antwerp), was the base of the work. As a scenography that was build before the process began it became the starting point of the concept and creation.
As an intimate space that could cross different levels of the building it reminded Pieter of the soul that lives in between the conscious and unconscious. Eventually the elevator became the body and the performer became the soul of one identity.
Does the identity change according to its body?
How can an identity survive within a mechanical body?
